So, I wanted to pop on in and make a much-needed post about my note taking system and the tips I think are best for note taking and ensuring that you are able to retain all of the information from your classes! With that being said…
here are the best tips for note taking that I think all students should follow!
write your notes
Yes, yes, yes! If you want to be successful, write out your notes. And I get it, typing can be faster and easier. However, by writing your notes, you are allowing yourself to not n only learn and retain the information. Typing is easier, yes. But, when you write our the notes, the information sticks in your brain faster and longer. You can read more about the importance of handwriting notes versus typing your notes here! Also, I love Five Star notebooks and think that the quality is great. That said, I tend to purchase their notebooks. However, any college-ruled notebook will do the job! I tend to get different colored notebooks for my classes, but do what is best for you.
use highlighters + color-code your information
This is super important! Seriously. Color-coding your notes will help you stay organized and will also make studying and retaining the information so much easier and stress-free. To do this, simply go to your local Target, Dollar Tree, or Walmart and purchase multi-colored highlighters. Sometimes they come in packs, but you can also buy them individually. Color-coding your notes is super nice and beneficial because it helps you better retain all of the information and makes for a way less stressful study session! Also, keep your color-code key consistent with all of your classes, too!
For example, you can choose to use the following colors to highlight various aspects of your notes:
- yellow = definitions (ex: independence)
- pink = important people (ex: john hancock)
- green = dates (ex: july, 4, 1776)
- orange = places (ex: independence hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
add titles and dates in the header/title of your n0tes
Organization is they key to success, tight? Right! So, to ensure that your notes are as organized as possible, do yourself a favor and write the date, title of the lecture/section/class on the very top line of your paper. Doing this will help keep all of your information well organized, so that when you go to study, you know exactly where to look. Also, keeping track of the dates can also serve as a helpful memory tool, too!
jot down textbook page numbers
There is nothing more annoying than reading tour notes and wanting to refer back to a specific textbook page, section, or chapter and not remembering what pages the information is on and having to flip through the whole book. Ok, well, there are things that are much more annoying than that. But, let’s admit that it can be pretty frustrating, especially when you have a quiz or test that is right around the corner. So, to prevent this, I highly recommend putting page numbers in parenthesis near a specific definition or segment of notes so that you can easily refer back to your textbook without having to go page-by-page. So, for example, in the margin of your notebook, you would write/do the following:
staple and/or tape all handouts into your notebook
YES! I have found this to be super helpful. Whenever I am in class and my professor gives us handouts, regardless of what it says, I make sure to staple or tape the handout in my notebook for that date. That way, when studying or using my notes, all resources for that particular class or lecture are readily available to me!
